Mit dem Begriff (Lowland) Scots, auch Lallans, wird eine westgermanische Sprache beziehungsweise eine Reihe von englischen Dialekten bezeichnet, die in Schottland im Tiefland – nicht jedoch im (ehemaligen) gälischen Sprachgebiet der Highlands und Hebriden – gesprochen werden und im bergigen Südschottland (Southern Uplands), im Central Belt (Glasgow-Edinburgh) und in einem Landstreifen entlang der Ostküste bis nach Aberdeen beheimatet sind. Eine Untersuchung des General Register Office ergab 1996 eine Sprecherzahl von ca. 1,5 Millionen Menschen, also ca. 30 % der Einwohner Schottlands. Außerdem wird Scots in den Teilen Nordirlands und Donegals gesprochen, die im 17. Jahrhundert von Schotten besiedelt wurden; hier wird es sowohl von Protestanten als auch von Katholiken gesprochen, aber aus ethnopolitischen Gründen als eine Sprache der protestantischen Bevölkerung gefördert.
