Palmyra (Atoll)
Das Palmyra-Atoll (, []) ist ein Atoll im Pazifischen Ozean und befindet sich etwa 1800 Kilometer südwestlich von Hawaii. Es bildet derzeit das einzige eingegliederte, nicht organisierte Staatsgebiet (englisch: incorporated, unorganized territory) der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika und wird von diesen zu den sogenannten United States Minor Outlying Islands gezählt.

Palmyra Atoll
Palmyra Atoll is an unoccupied equatorial Northern Pacific atoll administered as an unorganized incorporated territory by the United States federal government. Its landmass hosts a variable temporary population of 4–20 "non-occupants", namely staff and scientists employed by various departments of the US government and The Nature Conservancy, as well as a rotating mix of Palmyra Atoll Research Consortium scholars pursuing research.

Background
The Kingdom of Hawaii claimed the atoll in 1862, and the US included it among the Hawaiian Islands when it annexed the archipelago in 1898. The Hawaii Statehood Act of 1959 did not include Palmyra Atoll, which is now privately owned by the Nature Conservancy. This organization is managing the atoll as a nature preserve. The lagoons and surrounding waters within the 12 nautical mile US territorial seas were transferred to the US Fish and Wildlife Service and were designated a National Wildlife Refuge in January 2001.
