The New York metropolitan area includes the most populous city in the United States (New York City); Long Island and the Mid- and Lower Hudson Valley in the state of New York; the five largest cities in New Jersey (Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth, and Edison) and their vicinities; six of the seven largest cities in Connecticut (Bridgeport (the largest city in Connecticut), New Haven, Stamford, Waterbury, Norwalk, and Danbury) and their vicinities; and five counties in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Die New York Metropolitan Area, auch Tri-States-Area oder Tri States Region ( für ‚Drei-Staaten-Region‘) genannt, ist die Metropolregion rund um New York City. Sie ist nach Einwohnerzahl die größte Metropolregion der Vereinigten Staaten und die achtgrößte der Welt. Sie umfasst Teile der Staaten New York, New Jersey, Connecticut und Pennsylvania. Gemäß US-Behörden gibt es zwei Definitionen für diese Metropolregion. Die New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island Metropolitan Statistical Area hat eine Fläche von 73.405 km² und die Einwohnerzahl beträgt 18,9 Millionen (Stand 2010). Die etwas weiter gefasste New York-Newark-Bridgeport Combined Statistical Area weist sogar knapp 22,1 Millionen Einwohner auf 30.671 km² Fläche auf (Stand 2010).
