Der Begriff Diaspora ([], diaspora ‚Verstreutheit‘) bezeichnet seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert hauptsächlich religiöse oder ethnische Gruppen, die ihre traditionelle Heimat verlassen haben und unter Andersdenkenden lebend über weite Teile der Welt verstreut sind. Er kann aber auch einfach eine Minderheitssituation, vor allem einer Religionsgruppe, bezeichnen.

A diaspora (from Greek διασπορά, "scattering, dispersion") is a scattered population whose origin lies within a smaller geographic locale. Diaspora can also refer to the movement of the population from its original homeland. Diaspora has come to refer particularly to historical mass dispersions of an involuntary nature, such as the expulsion of Jews from Judea, the fleeing of Greeks after the fall of Constantinople, the African Trans-Atlantic slave trade, the southern Chinese or Hindus of South Asia during the coolie trade, the deportation of Palestinians in the 20th century and the exile and deportation of Circassians.

Diaspora (currently styled diaspora* and formerly styled DIASPORA*) is a nonprofit, user-owned, distributed social network that is based upon the free Diaspora software. Diaspora consists of a group of independently owned nodes (called pods) which interoperate to form the network. As of March 2014, there are more than Diaspora accounts.
