In the administrative divisions of France, the department (, ) is one of the three levels of government below the national level ("territorial collectivities"), between the  18 administrative regions and the commune. There are 96 departments in metropolitan France and 5 overseas departments, which also are classified as regions. Departments are further subdivided into 335 arrondissements, themselves divided into cantons; the latter two have no autonomy and are used for the organisation of police, fire departments and sometimes elections.

Ein Département [] (deutsche Schreibweise Departement) ist eine Gebietskörperschaft in Frankreich. Das Territorium der Französischen Republik ist nach zentralstaatlichem Strukturprinzip in 101 Département unterteilt. Diese sind in 18 Regionen (inkl. Korsika mit Sonderstatus) gruppiert. 96 der 101 Départements liegen in Europa, die restlichen 5 sind Übersee-Départements (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Französisch-Guayana, Réunion, Mayotte). Jedes der fünf letztgenannten bildet zugleich auch eine eigene Region. Als bisher letztes Département kam 2011 die Insel Mayotte hinzu.
